7 things I have learnt blogging

Hello everyone!

So today it's rainy (who said the rain in Spain falls mainly in the plain? What about this little island in the Mediterranean where I live?) and I should be studying a little bit since finals are coming up and stuff but I really wanted to write a post. I'm expecting the postman to come home anytime this week/the following week and get ready a nice haul for you. I can't say more though! ;-)

I noticed I have been blogging since February and I have been having lots of fun because I have met amazing people and I really enjoy reading your blogs so I thought I would write a post on the things I have learnt while blogging, which are plenty. I hope it serves as some sort of tip post or even wake up call to new bloggers!

(Also, if you don't agree with what I say, let me know in the comments below! This can be a nice debate!)

  1. This is a community. No matter if you have 10 followers or you have 1000: we are a community and we all have started off as the same. It's not like you make the blog and BANG you have 1000+ followers and 50+ comments all of the sudden (unless you're a famous youtuber previous to having a blog, of course... hahaha!)
  2. Comment and you will most likely be commented back. I remember a few years ago, two of my friends had a fashion blog which became sort of popular (with more than 600 followers on GFC and plenty, plenty of comments!) and I remember I asked them how they became so popular and they told me "People comment, but it's because we comment a lot, too!" And I mean, it makes sense, right? At the end of the day, visitors are coming to your blog when you have a new post so why don't you go to their blogs and comment them back? It's a community - it's about making friends, not being lonely with a blog with a bunch of comments! However, don't be mad if someone doesn't comment you back. Personally, sometimes I forget, I'm probably the worst comment back-er ever. But I really try it!
  3. You need to invest in your blog. That may sound odd to you, but I believe you have to invest your time and even money. Whether you have a beauty blog, fashion blog, lifestyle blog or all in one blog, you need to invest time on designing a good layout / pay for a good layout, and you have to use your items or you could just buy some for the sake of your blog. For example, there were things I didn't know I would end up buying but I ended up buying them, not only for me, but for the blog. "Aw yes, this foundation looks good, I will buy it and try it on and write a post on it!"
  4. The layout says a lot about your blog. That may sound shallow, I know. It's very easy to design a simple layout or find a premade layout without having to spend money on it! (However if you want to spend money on a layout, that's great!) Bloggers seem to love minimalist layouts. Everything is simpler, you don't have glittery things around the corners like it's 2004 or big fancy fonts with different colours. I'm always a bit hesitant to read a blog if the layout doesn't make me want to read it, or the pictures are very blurry, or the font is big - or even Comic Sans MS.
  5. You don't need a fancy camera to make your blog more appealing. If you are really serious about blogging, well, I would recommend a camera that takes great pictures. Most people have Nikon D3000/D3100/D3200 or Canon 600D. Both are reflex cameras and what is important here is that their lenses are great to focus on small things, details, which are very important when blogging. However, if you can't be arsed to buy afford one of those cameras, I would definitely go for a normal camera that will allow you to take good pictures. For example these days I have been taking pictures with my iPhone, sometimes I switch to my best friend's camera. Some people have great phones with great cameras so why not using them?!
  6. You don't need to master Photoshop to make your pictures appealing. Seriously. I do have photoshop because I'm a geek and I love photoshop, and design, and drawing on a graphic tablet, etc. But there are P-L-E-N-T-Y of alternatives to Photoshop. At the end of the day, what you really need for your pictures is brightness, contrast, and a bit of colour edition. You can use Photofiltre and Picasa for that.
  7. Inspire and get inspired. It is very hard to come up with a super original post, and even if you do, I'm sure people will start after you. AND THAT IS GOOD. I browse blogs to look for inspiration, for things to try, ideas... I think it's very important. HOWEVER, that does not mean you should plagiarise something. I don't think people do that anymore but, please, don't steal pictures from other bloggers because that's very low.

Do you agree or disagree with the 7 topics I mentioned?

  1. Great post and points I totally agree with all especially the commenting part and having a nice blog design with large photos :) I always find these more appealing to the eye! I also use Photoshop Lightroom as I can't afford Photoshop ;) I did have it a few years back but my old laptop stopped working so I lost it :( so figured I would invest in the CD and love light room as it has the same tools as Photoshop just not as advanced :) xx

    1. I'm cheeky and I always download photoshop for free - I could teach you how to do that, it's pretty easy! But I read Photoshop Lightroom is pretty great, as you said, has the basics so it counts! ^_^ Thank you very much Jenny xxxx

  16. Wow what a great post! I totally agree with your points!
I alway love to receive comments and that's why I also comment on other peoples posts - in the hope they'll appreciate it as much as I do :)

And I'd love to have a better layout but I'm a bit scared that even if I really like it at that time, I will get bored with it and will want to change it soon afterwards and then the money would go to "waste"! If that makes any sense? haha

And I promised myself to make more friends through blogging! I don't just want to be quite and by myself but actually talk to some lovely people :)

  19. I think all of these points are awesome! I love the blogging community so much <3 And even though I am more a small time blogger at the moment, I am gradually growing and finding awesome blogs that I follow by email too. Bloglovin' is awesome, it's a great way to find and track all my blogs and it even sends a suggested list :D I think the community as well as the fun posting is for myself, is the best bit :D

Hello, thank you for taking your time to comment! I read them all and I usually reply! (Unless I forget, but I do read them!!!)

However, please don't do follow for follow - I will most likely follow you if I like your blog and everything about it but don't ask for a follow for follow! Thank you!

PS. Leave your links though, I love reading new blogs! xx
